Taking Pride in Our Oral Health: The Role of Health Professionals in LGBTQIA+ Oral Health Equity

This month, we call on our oral health partners and champions to reflect on what health providers can do to create safe, supportive and inclusive care settings for patients of all genders and sexualities. The LGBTQIA+ community is recognized as a disadvantaged population that experiences difficulty in accessing health care services. Individuals who identify as something other than heterosexual and/or cis-gendered report experiences of stigma and discrimination in health care settings, and as a result are less likely to seek timely medical and dental care. It is the responsibility of the oral health and medical communities to understand the barriers that this population faces in accessing care and to create a welcoming environment for all genders and sexualities. The OHNEP team is dedicated to promoting oral health and overall health equity nationwide for all individuals, and we stand with the LGBTQIA+ community in advocating for accessible and inclusive health care environments.
