OHNEP Grantee Spotlight: Montana University

Every year, the OHNEP program sponsors a grant program to nursing programs nationwide that funds development of interprofessional oral-systemic health instructional resources to be used either in the clinical or classroom setting. To transform interprofessional education and clinical practice, increase oral health access, reduce oral health disparities and ultimately improve oral-systemic outcomes for our communities, it is critical to integrate interprofessional oral health content and clinical experiences into the curriculum of nursing, medical, and dental programs.
Recently, Montana University, the recipient of an OHNEP grant, developed an interprofessional program that connects all professional nurses, physicians and physician assistants practicing throughout rural Montana with practicing dentists. The aim of this project was to increase access to essential oral health services, particularly preventative, in Montana’s rural communities.
Partnering with the Montana Office of Rural Health/Area Health Education Center and Sprout Oral Health, Montana University developed a webinar entitled “Why Oral Health Must be a Part of the Patient-Centered Medical Home”. The webinar discusses the important roles that primary care providers can play in assisting patients to have better oral-systemic health.  Though aimed at Montana’s healthcare professionals, this webinar is a wonderful resource for all those looking to learn about the oral-systemic connection, how oral health fits into the PCMH model, and how to engage the primary care providers into providing necessary oral healthcare, particularly to vulnerable communities.
The webinar is available on the OHNEP website, in the resources section and can be accessed here.
Our OHNEP Team would like to say a big thank you to Montana University, the Office of Rural Health/AHEC and Sprout Oral Health, for developing this very important oral health resource!
